Applications Available for the Year 2001
Rotary Summer Youth Exchange

Applications are now available for the 2001 short-term Summer Youth Exchange Program. Our 2000 program was very successful with 23 students visiting 5 European countries. Of these 23, 7 were from District 6220, so there is much potential for expansion of this program in our district as over 50 exchanges are available.

From mid-June to mid-July American students (ages 15-18) live with a Rotary family in one of the nine participating European countries. Upon their return in mid-August,, the exchange students host brother or sister travels with them to the United States to experience American life.

Students stay with families in Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, France, Turkey, and the Netherlands. Applications are processed in the order they are received. Those received later may have fewer choices of countries. Applications are to be returned by February 28, 2001.

The $1,595.00 cost includes all air fares, transportation, insurance, chaperon expenses, orientation and administration costs. Room, board, recreation and sight seeing are provided by the host families. There are no costs to the sponsoring Rotary Club for this program.

The purpose of the program is threefold:

1) To promote international goodwill and understanding at the person to person level.
2) To provide the opportunity for U.S. students to experience international living for a four week period.
3) To allow foreign students the opportunity to visit their American counterpart for a reciprocal four week period.

This program is a magnificent opportunity for students from our district to have a international experience. I hope the clubs will start working early to promote this program through their local high schools and Rotary members. This program is open to both Rotarian and non-Rotarian familiies.
